Whenever cleaning the floor crosses someone’s mind, the first thing they think about is what type of cleaner they should use. In most cases, homeowners usually resort to using a commercial cleaner from the store.
While the cover of the product paints a pretty picture, the reality is that it’s not always effective in cleaning the floor. In fact, some cleaners can damage your floor.
Aside from the increased risk of a damaged floor, some commercial floor cleaning products also contribute to indoor air pollution. Due to overexposure, they can also cause health issues. Fortunately, there’s a more effective and healthier alternative; homemade floor cleaners.
Here’s how to make your own floor cleaner at home.
Types of Floor Cleaners
Before you can make your own cleaner, You would think that you’d only need one kind of cleaner to scrub the floor. However, this isn’t the case. You’ll find different types of floor cleaners that are a specific type of flooring.
Below is a brief list of the types of floor cleaners:
- Vinyl floor cleaner
- Wood floor cleaner
- Ceramic tile floor cleaner
- Carpet cleaner
- Marble floor cleaner
Each of these floors can only be paired with a cleaner that’s specifically made for it. For example, you would never put carpet cleaner on vinyl flooring. Vinyl flooring is fragile and can be easily damaged by the wrong cleaner, even if it’s homemade.
How to Make a Floor Cleaner
With the different flooring types, there are many ways to make a floor cleaner that’s best suited for it. You may think that making your own floor cleaner is difficult. However, it’s a lot easier than you think.
If you have vinyl flooring, you’ll need to use rubbing alcohol, vinegar, up to two gallons of water and a small amount of dish detergent. Like we previously mentioned, vinyl flooring is fragile, so proceed with caution.
Cleaning carpet is another task most people don’t enjoy. Carpet absorbs everything from juice stains to animal urine. However, it can also absorb the chemicals in commercial products, which, as you know, can be detrimental to your health. A homemade carpet cleaner, on the other hand, contains almost no chemicals.
All you’ll need to make your own carpet cleaner is a little bit of dish detergent, baking soda, warm water, and vinegar. Since you want your carpet to smell nice, you can add a splash of lemon juice to it as well. Funny enough, the ingredients for a homemade carpet cleaner also apply to ceramic tiles and even wood flooring.
Like vinyl flooring, you need to be extra careful when cleaning marble flooring. Luckily, there is a safe and effective way to ensure the marble is clean and makes it shine. To make your own marble cleaner, mix together a gentle dish soap and warm water. Gently clean the marble flooring, making sure to rinse any remaining residue that could lead to stickiness when it dries.
Next, we come to one of the more tricky floors to clean. Wood is a material that is associated with all forms of damage. When cleaning wood flooring, do not use an abundance of water. Take a bucket and fill it with warm water. Fill it up to at least a gallon. Mix it with white, distilled vinegar and liquid soap. Submerge the sponge in the water and then ring it out. Only put it on the floor when the sponge is mildly damp.
Finally, cleaning ceramic tile with DIY products is simple. Just mix one gallon of warm water and approximately 1/4 cup of white vinegar into a bucket. Then, take a sponge or a towelette, dip it in the bucket and ring it out until it’s mildly wet. Despite ceramic floors being easy to clean and incredibly durable, it’s better to be safe. Gently wipe the floor until dry with the soft towel.
Keeping the floor clean may be a necessity, but it’s not as bad as some people make it out to be. Use everything you’ve read here to ensure your floor is always clean.
