The Wonders of Baking Soda: a Multi-Purpose Household Cleaner

Without a doubt, baking soda is one of the most versatile products that you could ever buy. It can be used to clean many areas of your home to help keep your family healthy. Check out the tips below on how to use baking soda as a multipurpose household cleaner.

Clean your kitchen

Cleaning the kitchen can be a daunting task at times and you can use baking soda to simplify the process. In fact, you can use it to clean your oven, counter tops, refrigerator and many other areas of your kitchen. All you have to do is mix it with warm water. If you have stains that are stubborn, you can create a baking soda paste.

Freshen the air

If you’ve ever sprayed air freshener in a room that had a foul odor, you probably know that it doesn’t usually do a good job at resolving the problem because it only masks the odor. What’s great about using baking soda as an air freshener is that it neutralizes odor instead of masking it. You can create an air freshener using a spray bottle, baking soda and warm water. You can even add essential oils to the mix.

Destroy garbage odor

Since garbage usually contains waste products, it can quickly develop an odor that’s unpleasant. You can sprinkle baking soda to the bottom of your garbage can to resolve the issue because it neutralizes odor. In fact, baking soda eliminates a large percentage of garbage odor.

Whiten laundry

Baking soda does a great job at cleaning laundry. It’s best when used in addition to your current laundry detergent. It’s good for whitening your laundry and softening materials. Another benefit is that you won’t need to use as much laundry detergent as you would without baking soda.

Neutralize refrigerator odor

Baking soda is used most often to neutralize refrigerator odor. Even if you do a good job at cleaning your refrigerator, there is bound to be an oder from time to time. This can be resolved by slightly opening a box of baking soda and placing it in the back of your refrigerator.

Eliminate carpet stains

Let’s face it, it’s not easy to keep carpet clean. In addition to vacuuming on regular basis, you also have to eliminate stains. Stains often occur during the process of daily living. When using baking soda for your carpet, it’s best to create a spray with baking soda and white vinegar. After spraying the liquid onto the stain, allow it to sit for a few minutes and then rub it gently.

Remove pesticides from fruit

Everyone wants to be healthy and physically fit. Sometimes there are obstacles that get in the way. If you’re someone that’s concerned about pesticides on fruit, you can mitigate the problem by using baking soda to clean your fruit before eating it. Soaking fruit in cold water and baking soda for up to 15 minutes will get the job done.

Clean your bathroom

Maintaining a clean bathroom is important for your overall health and wellness. This includes cleaning the sink, toilet, bathtub and all other surfaces. As you might have guessed by now, baking soda can handle all of these areas of your bathroom. It’s perfect for light daily cleaning and more rigorous weekly cleaning.

Clean tile grout

Accidents happen in the kitchen, and this is exactly why you’ll want to use baking soda to clean your tile grout. It’s easy to do and all you need is a small amount of warm water and baking soda to create a paste. Depending on the stain, you might need to use a scouring pad.

Polish your silverware

Sometimes polishing silverware can feel like a punishment. This doesn’t have to be the case, especially if you choose to use baking soda. To simplify the process, add boiling water to baking soda and vinegar, then carefully pour it over the silverware, allowing it to sit for about five minutes. You’ll then pour the hot water off of the silverware and perform a cold water rinse.

Deodorize your shoes

Stinky shoes can ruin a freshly cleaned home. Fortunately, there’s an easy remedy and that’s using baking soda to freshen them up. You can accomplish this with a few tablespoons of baking soda tucked into a fabric pouch that’s placed inside of each shoe. You can leave it in the shoe for as long as necessary.

What’s amazing about baking soda is that it isn’t toxic like many cleaning products on the market. If you prefer using products that are environmentally-friendly, you should definitely incorporate baking soda into your cleaning routine.
